I’m Nathan McDonnell and I play for Sydney Explicit in the Australian Super 7s Series.
Last month I was invited to go to Melbourne and play for Hard2Overcome (another Dye sponsored team) in the Able Cup – a race to four event hosted by the
Adrenalin Paintball Club. The Able Cup was different from any event I have played in before, as its aim was to raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation. It was very rewarding.
After walking the field Saturday morning and getting our game plan sorted, we were ready to play some paintball. At the end of Saturday’s games we had played 8 rounds and were sitting in second position. An okay place to be, but we still had a lot of work to do as there were still 3 rounds to play on Sunday followed by the finals.
Sunday morning saw us face off against the top of the ladder team South East Cartel. After some back and forth points the game ran out of time and ended in a draw. We won the next round, but we did lose out on the last round of the day. At least it was to our sister team H2O Blue. Despite the loss, it was really good for us as it showed us we had a few flaws in our game plan which we sat down an quickly changed.
At the end of prelims the top four teams were:
South East Cartel
The first final of the afternoon was for 3rd an 4th between H2O Blue and Hustle. It was a close match with both teams swapping the lead, but with time running out it ended in a draw so they were sent into a sudden death 1 on 1. Both players had the crowd on edge with a few close calls and great moves and in the end H2O Blue came away with the win and 3rd place.
The Final for 1st and 2nd place was between South East Cartel and my team H2O. I would like to point out that the two times our teams had previously faced off against each other over the weekend, both games ended in a draw.
The game started off strong with the two teams losing players off the break. We did however get the upper hand and took the 1st point.
The 2nd point started off like the 1st with both teams battling for position and after a few gun battles we came away with a 2-0 lead.
The 3rd point didn’t go the way we wanted with South East Cartel tearing through the field and bringing the game to 2-1.
The next point though, was a real battle. Both teams dug in and fought for every inch of ground. After a few key moves we got the kills and came away with the point making it 3-1 to us. This gave us a massive confidence boost going into the next point.
The last point started off with us shooting 3 of the Cartel guys off the break and then closing it out quickly to come away with a 4-1 WIN.
Needless to say, we were very pleased!
We would like to thank the guys from South East Cartel for a tough final. You guys made us work for every point. We would also like to thank Paintball Addiction for organising and sponsoring the event. And finally, we would like to thank DYE PRECISION and Devon Stutz for sponsoring our team an giving us an LA Ironmen jersey to raffle off. We ended up raising $1542.10 for the Make a Wish Foundation.
Playing with the H2O guys was great fun and they have an awesome and well bonded team. I am really looking forward to the 2014 season as I have been asked to join the H2O roster and have accepted. With H2O I will be playing the PAVS and Race events in Melbourne (but this doesn’t mean I’ve left behind the Sydney events – I will continue with those also).
Thanks again to Dye Precision for all the support over the years and future.

On the weekend of the 14th and 15th of September I ventured North to Leeds, to play the annual StaarGate big game, held at the Powerplay field. This would be my first year playing Staargate, and having heard such great stories; with over 500 players attending, I just had to play!
Arriving early on the Saturday was great – there was so much to walk around and see; from a bouncy castle to a 20v20 speedball match. Once I’d set my tent up, I headed down to the staging area to gear up and take part in the oldies v young-guns game. We played two rounds of this and us young-guns won confidently each round. It was a great chance to play on a small segment of the field and get a taste for what the big game was going to be like!
The organisers of the UK’s tournament series – the CPPS – were running a Sup’Air mini game to give people the chance to try it out for the first time, so later that afternoon I hopped on there and had a blast – still rocking the DAM, ofcourse! It brought back some great memories from my days as a tournament player, and my equipment preformed just as flawlessly as it does out in the woods!
Sunday began with an explosive start and we quickly managed to push the blues right back into their re-spawn area thanks to some aggressive gameplay. My highlight of the weekend was sneaking through the bushes and winning a 4 on 1 – I mean it when I say this camo works. Take a look at some of the photos! (Credits to BradloPhotography).
Timing the last push perfectly with great effect, we managed to push the blue team out of the key areas thanks to decisive communication from our faction leaders. We dominated gameplay on the Sunday and we ultimately cruised home victorious. It was a great weekend with lots of exciting fire fights on the field, and a great opportunity to catch up with some old friends off the field.
Huge thanks to Shoreline Outdoor Paintball for by far the best scenario game I’ve been to all year and a huge thanks to Dye Paintball UK and Dye Tactical for the outstanding gear.
Catch me on Facebook @ WilliamCliffordOfficial and Instagram @wclifford93 for photos and videos from the events I attend.
The final stop on my war tour is a mag fed only event that I’ll be playing in Draklow Tunnels. So look forward to seeing some epic firefights!

Suspense, drama, commitment , love and honour… sounds like the making of a good read on a warm and breezy weekend. Fortunately, and thank God for our Team DRX, we get to experience all these first-hand last weekend at the MYNPL (Malaysian Paintball League) 2013 Finale in the historical city of Malacca.
Knowing how crucial it was, we prepared and trained ourselves mentally to face the onslaught. This event we have the honour of playing with the top teams from Malaysia and Thailand. What a finale it is going to be!
On Saturday’s qualifying rounds, we tried out different formations on the field to find what suits our playing styles to get us ready for Sunday games. We came out 2-2 to finish 5th. Good enough to move onward to Sunday.
Come Sunday, we were mentally and physically prepared, the team was ready to go all the way to the top. We won convincingly against Dark Kinghts (4-1, Qtr) and Recda Waxers (4-0, Semis) to set up the dream final against Team Aisawan of Thailand.
We have played the Thai team twice this year and the record was 1-1, nail biting games every time and we expect nothing different this time round as they always played to their best.
Come finals, our team drew first blood and won a quick first point but the Thais responded by winning the next 2 points in a race to 4. The seesaw battle rages on till the game clock stops with a score line of 3-3. Wow….the first ever overtime decider game in a Division 1 final!
Going into the overtime game, the silence is deafening, the 2 minutes feels like an eternity. But we told ourselves, we are not just playing for the team but the honour of our country is at stake here too…We gave it our all….
In the end, it was enough… We hung on to our last ounce of strength to hang the flag and the victory was complete! What a finale and that’s why we love playing paintball.
A big thank you to DYE and our sponsors for making this win possible and memorable. A special big shout out to Dye CG paint and the DM 13s, it definitely completes and makes us the champions that we are. We look forward to 2014 and another fruitful partnership with Dye Precision.
