Royalty’s narrow miss at WCPPL Event #2

Friday, June 6th, 2014

This is Royalty’s second event this season for WCPPL. For the first time since 2009, Dave Bains and Mike Hinman have finally agreed to host a tournament at Capital Edge Paintball Park. This is an excellent opportunity for Northern California teams to get a taste of the event as a majority of the events are held down in Las Vegas / Southern California. Royalty will play the whole tournament on Saturday. You can only imagine what it is like to play 7 race-to-4 matches in 90-degree weather. On top of that you are playing very long matches on the very slow PSP MAO layout. Royalty comes in hot in the preliminary matches with 3 wins and a tie.

The next 2 matches against Asylum and Wicked had to deal with a little luck in our favor, resulting in Royalty moving on to the finals against Dave Bains’ DMG. The first 2 points were a sweep for DMG, almost up 5 bodies every point. Royalty is on their heels for the next few points but we manage to come back and even it up at 2-2 before time ran out. Both teams were about to witness the biggest nail-biting match of their paintball career. The winner will be decided by the best of 3 1-on-1’s. Clayton Parker is the first to step up to the plate, stalemate. Brian Dubois is second, stalemate.

Johnny Won is up next, he told his teammates that he was going to pretend his hopper was jammed so that the opponent had no decision but to rush up. His execution did not work and DMG is in the driver’s seat 1-0. Jerry Caro is next up to plate and eventually; DMG gets a shot in on him. DMG wins the event by winning 2 1-on1s. This is the second time Royalty comes out with a second place. We consider this tournament a learning experience and Royalty plans to come out next event with an overall better performance. In our eyes, 2nd place is the 1st loser, and Royalty will do whatever it takes to ensure that they do not get a 2nd place again.

Royalty goes all-in at WCPPL Las Vegas!

WCPPL Event #1 | Las Vegas, Nevada (March 28th – 30th)

Dye sponsored Team Royalty have been grinding it out every weekend at Santa Clara Paintball. They have had tremendous help with some of the members of the new revamped Ironmen. With the majority of the team heading to Las Vegas on Thursday night, the dreaded car ride had a lot of them anxious for what is to come on Friday morning’s preliminary matches. Friday consisted of 3 matches, with Dave Bains DMG Green team being Royalty’s biggest threat (supposedly). Royalty came out hungry with the first 2 matches consisting of a 4-0 sweep. Against Dave Bains DMG Green team, Royalty came out swinging with 4-1, with the one point being a minor slip up.

Saturday consisted of a major match against Dave Bains second DMG team; the score is neck and neck at 3-3, with roughly 40 seconds on the clock. Royalty shoots 2 snake side players off the break, allowing their snake side player to push fluidly in the 50 snake. With all the attention drawn to Royalty’s snake player, the dorito side aggressively pushed down the field and eliminated the rest in order to clutch the flag hang with only 6 seconds left on the clock. Score was 4-3, Royalty is ecstatic.

Sunday rolls around and the pressure is on. We swept the Bushwhackers 4-1 in the quarterfinals, and LA Wrecking Crew 4-2 in the semifinals. Royalty is heading in the finals against LA Collision. Its neck and neck at 2-2, with LA Collision sending their player to the 50 A, Royalty starts dropping bodies. LA Collision continues to win the match 4-2. Though Royalty is upset, some good can be taken from this loss. Second place is not taken lightly, and we will be sure to come out swinging at the next WCPPL.

LA Ironmen and San Jose Royalty merge to become powerhouse PSP Champions team!

PRESS RELEASE:

San Jose Royalty and the Los Angeles Ironmen merge their rosters

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

San Diego, California (January 14th 2014)- San Jose Royalty and the Los Angeles Ironmen will merge their rosters for the 2014 PSP season. Royalty will cease to exist as a standalone entity and the best players on the squad will come over to the Ironmen. Members of the two teams are excited about the merger, as it will create a very strong team who will contend for the coveted PSP World Title.

The merger brings paintball legend Shane Pestana back into the Ironmen fold. Pestana has a storied history with the California team, first as a star player during its early years, then as captain during the late 90’s and early 2000’s, and then as the coach from 2004-2008; he guided the team to multiple World Championships during each tenure. Until this merge he had been helping Royalty as a player/coach during their assent through the divisional ranks.

Marcello Margott and Alex Goldman, two of the star players brought on last season for their second stint with the Ironmen, are happy to have the man back who they won their first World Titles with. Margott stated, I am ecstatic to have Shane Pestana back in the organization. He’s bringing hard working Royalty players who have great attitudes and the same work ethic as us. I think this team will quickly become a family. It’s going to take some time for the chemistry to kick in but when it does I think it will be a truly great Ironmen team. Shane is a leader by nature. He just knows how to get the best out of people so I can’t wait to start working with him again and see what we can accomplish together this time.”

Pestana said, “I’m ready to go, to help the Ironmen get back to where they should be, which is sitting at the top of the Champions Division. We have so many great talents on this team, so many hard working guys. Sure, it may take some time to gel, but the Ironmen will be a winning team again.”

Mikko Huttunen, a long time Ironmen veteran who also won titles with the team, will come on as a part of the coaching staff as well, which augments the Ironmen’s brain trust in its push back toward the podium. The Ironmen finished 5th overall during the 2013 season, and 4th at the World Cup, against one of the most competitive fields ever and this new merger proves they are dedicated to building a winning team again.
